In the spring of his days
The meaning of the expression is: at a young age.
פֵּרוּשׁוֹ שֶׁל הַבִּיטּוּי הוּא: בְּגִיל צָעִיר.
Sometimes, unfortunately, when a person passes away at a relatively young age, it is said that they passed away "in the spring of their life."
לִפְעָמִים, לְצַעֲרֵנוּ, כְּשֶׁאָדָם נִפְטַר בְּגִיל צָעִיר יַחֲסִית אוֹמְרִים עָלָיו שֶׁהוּא נִפְטַר "בַּאֲבִיב יָמָיו".
Spring is a season of blooming with pleasant weather and many warm sunny days; therefore, it serves as a metaphor for childhood and youth. In contrast, winter is considered a metaphor for old age and the end of a person's days.
הָאָבִיב הִיא עוֹנַת פְּרִיחָה עִם מֶזֶג אֲוִיר נָעִים וְהַרְבֵּה יְמֵי שֶׁמֶשׁ חֲמִימִים וְלָכֵן הִיא מְשַׁמֶּשֶׁת כְּדִימּוּי לְגִיל הַיַּלְדוּת ו ְהַנְּעוּרִים.
וּבְנִיגּוּד לְכָךְ הַחוֹרֶף נֶחֱשָׁב לִימֵי הַזִּקְנָה וּלְדִימּוּי לְסוֹף יָמָיו שֶׁל הָאָדָם.
Did you know that in Hebrew, the season of spring is used to indicate a person's age? For example, if someone has a birthday and turns 20, we will say about them: "They have completed 20 springs."
הַיְדַעְתֶּם שֶׁבְּעִבְרִית מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בְּעוֹנַת הָאָבִיב כְּדֵי לְצַיֵּן אֶת גִּילוֹ שֶׁל הָאָדָם?
אִם לְמָשָׁל יֵשׁ לְמִישֶׁהוּ יוֹם הוּלֶּדֶת וְהוּא בֶּן 20, נֺאמַר עָלָיו: "מָלְאוּ לוֹ 20 אֲבִיבִים".
