כַּפְתּוֹר וָפֶרַח
KAFTOR VA-FERACH
A button and a flower
In modern Hebrew, we use the expression "button and flower" to describe beautiful things that complement each other in their appearance and are arranged in an aesthetically pleasing way.
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי כַּפְתּוֹר וָפֶרַח בְּעִבְרִית מוֹדֶרְנִית כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ רוֹאִים דְּבָרִים יָפִים הַמַּתְאִימִים זֶה לָזֶה מִבְּחִינַת צוּרָתָם, וּמְסוּדָּרִים בְּצוּרָה יָפָה לָעַיִן.
This expression appears in the Book of Exodus in the description of the Tabernacle's furnishings. As we know, the furnishings of the Tabernacle were adorned and decorated with great care.
הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה מוֹפִיעַ בְּסֵפֶר שְׁמוֹת בְּתֵיאוּר כְּלֵי הַמִּשְׁכָּן. כְּפִי שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ יוֹדְעִים כְּלֵי הַמִּשְׁכָּן הָיוּ מְקוּשָּׁטִים וּמְעוטָּרִים בִּתְשׂוּמֶת לֵב רַבָּה.
Therefore, "button and flower" is an expression we use when we see excellent craftsmanship or exquisite artwork.
לָכֵן כַּפְתּוֹר וָפֶרַח הוּא בִּיטּוּי שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בּוֹ כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ רוֹאִים מַעֲשֵׂה אָמָּנוּת מְשׁוּבָּח.
The "button" is a round shape with smooth edges, while the "flower" is also round but has the delicate edges of its petals.
הַכַּפְתּוֹר הוּא צוּרָה עֲגוּלָּה שֶׁגְּבוּלוֹתֶיהָ חֲלָקִים וְהַפֶּרַח גַּם הוּא עָגוֹל אוּלָם גְּבוּלוֹתָיו הֵם גְּבוּלוֹת עֲלֵי הַכּוֹתֶרֶת שֶׁלּוֹ.
