לְחָמִים וּמַאֲפִים – Breads and Pastries

To eat the cake and leave it whole (intact)

לֶאֱכֹל אֶת הָעוּגָה וּלְהַשְׁאִיר אוֹתָהּ שְׁלֵמָה

By the sweat of your nose, you shall eat bread

בְּזֵעַת אַפֶּיךָ תֹּאכַל לֶחֶם

Send your bread on the face of the water

שַׁלַּח לַחְמְךָ עַל-פְּנֵי הַמָּיִם

If there is no bread eat cakes

אִם אֵין לֶחֶם תֹּאכְלוּ עוּגוֹת

He knows on what side of the slice of bread the butter is spread

הוּא יוֹדֵעַ בְּאֵיזֶה צַד שֶׁל הַפְּרוּסָה מְרוּחָה הַחֶמְאָה

The house’s bread

לֶחֶם הַבַּיִת

Snatched up like hot buns

נֶחְטַף כְּמוֹ לַחְמָנִיּוֹת חַמּוֹת
