A mask - Masks

When we think of a mask in the context of Purim, we immediately think of something fun and funny, something that is part of the Purim costume.

כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ חוֹשְׁבִים עַל מַסֵּכָה בַּהֶקְשֵׁר שֶׁל פּוּרִים, מִיָּד עוֹלָה לָנוּ מַחְשָׁבָה עַל מַשֶּׁהוּ מְהַנֶּה וּמַצְחִיק, מַשֶּׁהוּ שֶׁהוּא חֵלֶק מֵהַתַּחְפּוֹשֶׂת שֶׁל פּוּרִים.

But know that in the Torah, the meaning of the mask is a figure cast in metal that was used for idol worship (idolatry): "They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed unto it" (Exodus 32:8).

אֲבָל דְּעוּ שֶׁבַּתּוֹרָה מַשְׁמָעוּתָהּ שֶׁל הַמַּסֵּכָה הִיא דְּמוּת יְצוּקָה מִמַּתֶּכֶת שֶׁשִּׁמְּשָׁה לַעֲבוֹדַת אֱלִילִים (עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה): "סָרוּ מַהֵר מִן הַדֶּרֶךְ אֲשֶׁר צִוִּיתִם עָשׂוּ לָהֶם עֵגֶל מַסֵּכָה וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ לוֹ וַיִּזְבְּחוּ לוֹ" שְׁמוֹת לב, פָּסוּק ח.

The modern meaning of the word מַסֵּכָהwas derived due to the similarity in sound to the English word "Mask."

אֶת הַמַּשְׁמָעוּת הַמּוֹדֶרְנִית קִבְּלָה הַמִּילָּה מַּסֵּכָה בִּגְלַל דִּמְיוֹן הַצְּלִיל לַמִּילָּה הַלּוֹעֲזִית Mask.

Metaphorically, when we talk about a person who puts on a mask, we mean a lying and hypocritical person who says different things to different people.

בְּאוֹפֶן מֵטָאפוֹרִי, כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ מְדַבְּרִים עַל אָדָם שֶׁשָּׂם מַסֵּכָה עַל פָּנָיו אֲנַחְנוּ מִתְכַּוְּנִים לְאָדָם שַׁקְרָן וְצָבוּעַ שֶׁאוֹמֵר דְּבָרִים שׁוֹנִים לַאֲנָשִׁים שׁוֹנִים.

Here are some sentences with the word 'mask' in different contexts:

הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם הַמִּילָּה 'מַסֵּכָה' בְּהֶקְשֵׁרִים שׁוֹנִים:

1. During the traditional carnival in Brazil, people go out to the streets wearing colorful and unique masks.

1. בִּזְמַן הַקַּרְנָבָל הַמָּסוׄרְתִּי בִּבְרָזִיל, הָאֲנָשִׁים יוֹצְאִים לָרְחוֹבוֹת כְּשֶׁהֵם עוֹטִים מַסֵּכוֹת צִבְעוֹנִיּוֹת וּמְיוּחָדוֹת .

2. After the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the world, people started wearing masks every time they left the house to protect themselves and those around them.

2. לְאַחַר שֶׁהִתְפַּשְּׁטָה מַגֵּפַת הַקּוֹרוֹנָה בְּרַחֲבֵי הָעוֹלָם, אֲנָשִׁים הֵחֵלּוּ לַעֲטוֹת מַסֵּכוֹת בְּכָל יְצִיאָה מֵהַבַּיִת כְּדֵי לְהָגֵן עַל עַצְמָם וְעַל הַסּוֹבְבִים.

3. When she entered the room, she felt the need to put on a mask to hide her true feelings and deal with the situation.

3. כְּשֶׁהִיא נִכְנְסָה לַחֶדֶר, הִיא חָשָׁה שֶׁהִיא צְרִיכָה לָשִׂים מַסֵּכָה כְּדֵי לְהַסְתִּיר אֶת רִגְשׁוֹתֶיהָ הָאֲמִיתִּיִּים וּלְהִתְמוֹדֵד עִם הַמַּצָּב.

4. After a busy long day, she loves to relax at home with a nourishing face mask that improves skin texture and rejuvenates the fresh feeling.
