The meaning of the infinitive "לַעֲלוֹת" is moving from a lower place to a higher place.
פֵּרוּשׁוֹ שֶׁל שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל 'לַעֲלוֹת' הוּא לַעֲבוֹר מִמָּקוֹם נָמוּךְ לְמָקוֹם גָּבוֹהַּ.
You can ascend stairs, take an elevator, board a train if you want to travel somewhere, or get on a bicycle for some physical activity.
אֶפְשָׁר לַעֲלוֹת בַּמַּדְרֵגוֹת, אֶפְשָׁר לַעֲלוֹת בַּמַּעֲלִית, אֶפְשָׁר גַּם לַעֲלוֹת לָרַכֶּבֶת אִם אֲנַחְנוּ רוֹצִים לִנְסוֹעַ לְאָן שֶׁהוּא, וְאֶפְשָׁר גַּם לַעֲלוֹת עַל הָאוֹפַנַּיִם כְּדֵי לַעֲשׂוֹת קְצָת פְּעִילוּת גּוּפָנִית.
You can also ascend to Israel. What does it mean to ascend to Israel? Is Israel physically higher than other countries? Well, not exactly.
אֶפְשָׁר גַּם לַעֲלוֹת לְיִשְׂרָאֵל. מָה זֹאת אוֹמֶרֶת לַעֲלוֹת לְיִשְׂרָאֵל? הַאִם יִשְׂרָאֵל נִמְצֵאת בְּמָקוֹם גָּבוֹהַּ יוֹתֵר מִשְּׁאַר הָאֲרָצוֹת? אָז זֶהוּ, שֶׁלֹּא בְּדִיּוּק.
Israel is not higher geographically, but spiritually. That’s why every Jew who decides to live in Israel is said to be making a spiritual ascent (Aliyah).
יִשְׂרָאֵל לֹא נִמְצֵאת בְּמָקוֹם גָּבוֹהַּ מִבְּחִינָה פִיזִית, אֶלָּא מִבְּחִינָה רוּחָנִית. וְלָכֵן כָּל יְהוּדִי שֶׁמַּחֲלִיט לָגוּר בְּאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל עוֹשֶׂה עָלִיָה רוּחָנִית.
Here are some sentences using the infinitive "לַעֲלוֹת":
הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל 'לַעֲלוֹת':
1. In order to ascend the ladder of success, a person must not only work hard but also learn from their mistakes and find ways to improve.
1. כְּדֵי לַעֲלוֹת בְּסוּלַּם הַהַצְלָחָה, אָדָם צָרִיךְ לֹא רַק לַעֲבוֹד קָשֶׁה אֶלָּא גַּם לִלְמוֹד מֵהַטָּעוּיוֹת שֶׁלּוֹ וְלִמְצוֹא דְּרָכִים לְהִשְׁתַּפֵּר.
2. In the journey of life, everyone must learn how to rise above their fears, discover their inner strength, and dare to break through new boundaries.
2. בְּמַסַּע הַחַיִּים כָּל אֶחָד צָרִיךְ לִלְמוֹד אֵיךְ לַעֲלוֹת מֵעֵבֶר לַפְּחָדִים שֶׁלּוֹ, לִמְצוֹא אֶת הַכּוֹחַ הַפְּנִימִי וּלְהָעֵז לִפְרוֹץ גְּבוּלוֹת חֲדָשִׁים.
3. In the past, when the Temple stood, the people of Israel would ascend to Jerusalem on the holiday of Shavuot to bring their first fruits (Bikkurim).
3. בֶּעָבָר, כְּשֶׁבֵּית הַמִּקְדָּשׁ הָיָה קַיָּם, עַם יִשְׂרָאֵל הָיָה נוֹהֵג לַעֲלוֹת לִירוּשָׁלַיִם בְּחַג הַשָּׁבוּעוֹת וּלְהָבִיא בִּיכּוּרִים.
4. Sometimes, ascending in rank is not just about position, but also a personal process where an individual grows and enhances their abilities.
4. לִפְעָמִים לַעֲלוֹת בְּדַרְגָּה זֶה לֹא רַק עִנְיָן שֶׁל תַּפְקִיד, אֶלָּא גַּם תַּהֲלִיךְ אִישִׁי שֶׁבּוֹ הָאָדָם מִתְפַּתֵּחַ וּמְשַׁפֵּר אֶת יְכוֹלוֹתָיו.
