Mount Meron
Mount Meron is the highest mountain in the Upper Galilee and one of the highest in Israel, with a peak rising 1,204 meters above sea level.
הַר מֵירוֹן הוּא הָהָר הַגָּבוֹהַּ בְּיוֹתֵר בַּגָּלִיל הָעֶלְיוֹן וּבֵין הַגְּבוֹהִים בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, עִם פִּסְגָּה הַמִּתְנַשֵּׂאת לְגוֹבַהּ שֶׁל 1,204 מֶטְרִים מֵעַל פְּנֵי הַיָּם.
Mount Meron is also considered a site of great religious and historical significance. It houses the tomb of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, making it a major pilgrimage destination every year on Lag BaOmer.
הַר מֵירוֹן נֶחֱשָׁב גַּם לַאֲתָר בַּעַל מַשְׁמָעוּת דָּתִית וְהִיסְטוֹרִית. בָּהָר נִמְצָא קִבְרוֹ שֶׁל רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בַּר יוֹחַאי, מָה שֶׁהוֹפֵךְ אוֹתוֹ לְמוֹקֵד עֲלִיָּה לָרֶגֶל בְּכָל שָׁנָה בְּל"ג בָּעוֹמֶר.
The annual Hilula (festive commemoration) held at Mount Meron, at the burial site of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, attracts thousands of people. Celebrants light a large bonfire on the roof of his tomb, sing, and dance.
הַהִילּוּלָה הַשְּׁנָתִית הַנֶעֱרֶכֶת בְּהַר מֵירוֹן, מְקוֹם קְבוּרָתוֹ שֶׁל רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בַּר יוֹחַאי, מוֹשֶׁכֶת אֵלֶיהָ אַלְפֵי אֲנָשִׁים.
הַחוֹגְגִים מַדְלִיקִים מְדוּרָה גְּדוֹלָה עַל גַּג הַקֶּבֶר שֶׁל רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בַּר יוֹחַאי, שָׂרִים וְרוֹקְדִים.
No one knows exactly how this tradition began, but records of a Hilula at Mount Meron date back to the 13th century.
אַף אֶחָד לֹא יוֹדֵעַ בְּדִיּוּק אֵיךְ הִתְחִיל הַמִּנְהָג הַזֶּה, אֲבָל כְּבָר בַּמֵּאָה הַ – 13 מוּזְכֶּרֶת הִילּוּלָה בְּהַר מֵירוֹן.
A unique custom observed during this Hilula is the "Chalaka" tradition: parents bring their three-year-old sons to the celebration and give them their first-ever haircut there.
יֵשׁ מִנְהָג מְיוּחָד שֶׁעוֹשִׂים בִּזְמַן הַהִילּוּלָה הַזֹּאת וְהוּא מִנְהַג הֶ'חָלָאקֶה': הוֹרִים שֶׁל בָּנִים שֶׁהִגִּיעוּ לְגִיל 3 מַגִּיעִים לַהִילּוּלָה עִם יַלְדֵיהֶם וְעוֹשִׂים לָהֶם שָׁם אֶת הַתִּסְפּוֹרֶת הָרִאשׁוֹנָה בְּחַיֵּיהֶם.
Unfortunately, on the night of Lag BaOmer, April 30, 2021, during the annual Hilula at Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai's tomb at Mount Meron, a tragic disaster occurred.
לְצַעֲרֵנוּ, בְּלֵיל ל"ג בָּעוֹמֶר, 30 בְּאַפְּרִיל 2021, בְּמַהֲלַךְ הַהִילּוּלָה הַשְּׁנָתִית בְּקֶבֶר רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בַּר יוֹחַאי בְּהַר מֵירוֹן קָרָה אָסוֹן.
The Meron Disaster was the deadliest civilian tragedy in Israel's history, in which 45 men and children lost their lives and 102 people were injured due to overcrowding that led to crushing and suffocation.
אֲסוֹן מֵירוֹן הוּא הָאָסוֹן הָאֶזְרָחִי הַגָּדוֹל בְּיוֹתֵר בְּתוֹלְדוֹת מְדִינַת יִשְׂרָאֵל, שֶׁבּוֹ נֶהֶרְגוּ 45 גְּבָרִים וִילָדִים וְנִפְצְעוּ 102 בְּנֵי אָדָם עֵקֶב עוֹמֶס קָהָל שֶׁגָּרַם לִמְעִיכָה וּלְחֶנֶק.
The disaster happened because a large crowd funneled through a narrow passage. The intense pressure caused people to fall over each other, leading to this tragic event.
הָאָסוֹן קָרָה בִּגְלַל שֶׁקָּהָל רַב זָרַם דֶּרֶךְ מַעֲבָר צַר. בְּעִקְבוֹת הַדּוֹחַק הָרַב, אֲנָשִׁים נָפְלוּ זֶה עַל זֶה, מָה שֶׁהוֹבִיל לָאָסוֹן הַטְּרָגִי.
On May 2, 2021, Israel declared a national day of mourning in memory of the victims of the Meron Disaster. On that day, flags were lowered to half-mast.
