“Ten measures of beauty descended to the world; nine were taken by Jerusalem, and one by the rest of the world.”
"עֲשָׂרָה קַבִּין יוֹפִי יָרְדוּ לָעוֹלָם, תִּשְׁעָה נָטְלָה יְרוּשָׁלַיִם וְאֶחָד כָּל הָעוֹלָם כּוּלּוֹ"
This is one of the most well-known sayings from Masechet Kiddushin in the Talmud, intended to praise the beauty of Jerusalem.
זֹאת הִיא אַחַת הַאִמְרוֹת הַמְּפוּרְסָמוֹת בְּיוֹתֵר בְּמַסֶּכֶת קִידּוּשִׁין, בַּתַלְמוּד, וּמַטְּרָתָהּ לְשַׁבֵּחַ אֶת הַיּוֹפִי שֶׁל הָעִיר יְרוּשָׁלַיִם.
A "kab" is an ancient unit of volume measurement used to measure quantities in liters, approximately ranging between 1.2 to 2.39 liters.
קַב הוּא מִידָּה קְדוּמָה שֶׁבְּעֶזְרָתָהּ הָיוּ מוֹדְדִים נֶפַח (לִיטְרִים), זֶה בְּעֵרֶךְ בֵּין 1.2 לְ-2.39 לִיטֶר.
The Talmudic sages state that the total amount of beauty given to the world was equivalent to ten kabin, and Jerusalem received nine of them.
חז"ל אוֹמְרִים בַּתַּלְמוּד שֶׁהַכַּמּוּת שֶׁל יוֹפִי שֶׁיָּרְדָה לָעוֹלָם שָׁוָה לְ – 10 קַבִּין וְתִשְׁעָה מֵהֶם לָקְחָה יְרוּשָׁלַיִם.
In other words, the sages explain that Jerusalem took the majority of the beauty that God bestowed upon the world.
כְּלוֹמַר, חז"ל מַסְבִּירִים בַּתַּלְמוּד שֶׁהָעִיר יְרוּשָׁלַיִם לָקְחָה אֶת רֹב הַיּוֹפִי שהקב"ה (הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא) הֶעֱנִיק לָעוֹלָם כּוּלּוֹ.
The sages frequently praise Jerusalem, particularly its beauty. They also describe the Land of Israel as the place where most of the world’s wisdom resides, in contrast to Babylon, which is depicted as the place where most of the world’s poverty exists.
חז"ל מַרְבִּים לְשַׁבֵּחַ אֶת הָעִיר יְרוּשָׁלַיִם בִּכְלָל וּבִפְרָט אֶת יוֺפְיָהּ וּמְתָאָרִים גַּם אֶת אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל כִּמְדִינָה שֶׁבָּהּ נִמְצֵאת רוֹב הַחָכְמָה בָּעוֹלָם, לְעוּמַּת בָּבֶל הַמְּתוֹאֶרֶת כִּמְדִינָה שֶׁבָּהּ נִמְצָא רוֹב הָעוֹנִי בָּעוֹלָם.
In the Talmud, Jerusalem is portrayed not only as a beautiful and sacred city but also as the center of the world.
יְרוּשָׁלַיִם מְתוֹאֶרֶת בַּתַלְמוּד לֹא רַק כְּעִיר יָפָה וּקְדוֹשָׁה, אֶלָּא גַּם כְּעִיר הַנִּמְצֵאת בְּמֶרְכַּז הָעוֹלָם.
The Talmud also states: “Anyone who has not seen Jerusalem in its splendor has never seen a magnificent city in their life.”
עוֹד נֶאֱמַר בַּתַּלְמוּד עַל יְרוּשָׁלַיִם: "מִי שֶׁלֹּא רָאָה אֶת יְרוּשָׁלַיִם בְּתִפְאַרְתָּהּ, לֹא רָאָה כֶּרֶךְ (עִיר) נֶחְמָד מֵעוֹלָם"…
The Talmud is not the first Jewish source to describe Jerusalem’s beauty. In the book of Lamentations, it is written: “Is this the city that was once called the perfection of beauty, the joy of all the earth?”
הַתַּלְמוּד הוּא לֹא הַמָּקוֹר הַיְּהוּדִי הָרִאשׁוֹן שֶׁמִּתְעַסֵּק בַּיּוֹפִי שֶׁל יְרוּשָׁלַיִם. כְּבָר בְּסֵפֶר אֵיכָה נֶאֱמַר עַל הָעִיר: "הֲזֹאת הָעִיר שֶׁיֹּאמְרוּ כְּלִילַת יוֹפִי מָשׂוֹשׂ לְכָל הָאָרֶץ…".
