When the cannons roar the muses are silent
The Muses are goddesses responsible for art, poetry, and love.
הַמּוּזוֹת הֵן אֵלוֹת שֶׁאַחְרָאִיּוֹת עַל הָאָמָּנוּת, הַשִּׁירָה וְהָאַהֲבָה.
When we use this expression, we mean that during times of war, we lack inspiration to create new works, embark on new projects, or even plan for the future, as the future feels uncertain.
כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה אֲנַחְנוּ מִתְכַּוְּנִים שֶׁבִּימֵי מִלְחָמָה אֵין לָנוּ הַשְׁרָאָה לִיצוֹר יְצִירוֹת חֲדָשׁוֹת, לְהִכָּנֵס לִפְּרוֹיֶקְטִים חֲדָשִׁים אוֹ אֲפִילּוּ לְתַכְנֵן אֶת הֶעָתִיד כִּי הֶעָתִיד לֹא בָּרוּר.
It is true that some people feel paralyzed and anxious during war and have no motivation to do anything.
זֶה נָכוֹן שֶׁיֵּשׁ אֲנָשִׁים שֶׁבִּזְמַן מִלְחָמָה הֵם מַרְגִּישִׁים מְשׁוּתָּקִים, חֲרֵדִים וְאֵין לָהֶם חֵשֶׁק לַעֲשׂוֹת שׁוּם דָּבָר.
On the other hand, there are writers and poets whose muse inspires them at all times, even during difficult periods and particularly in times of war, allowing them to create remarkable works.
מִצַּד שֵׁנִי יֵשׁ סוֹפְרִים וּמְשׁוֹרְרִים שֶׁהַמּוּזָה שׁוֹרָה עֲלֵיהֶם בְּכָל זְמַן, גַּם בִּזְמַנִּים קָשִׁים בִּכְלָל וּבִזְמַנֵּי מִלְחָמָה בִּפְרָט וְהֵם יוֹצְרִים יְצִירוֹת נֶהְדָּרוֹת.
