נִצֵּחַ בַּקְּרָב אֲבָל הִפְסִיד בַּמִּלְחָמָה

Won the battle but lost the war
Let's first discuss the difference between the words "קְרָב" (battle) and "מִלְחָמָה" (war). A "קְרָב" is essentially a part of a "מִלְחָמָה". A war consists of multiple battles.
בּוֹאוּ נְדַבֵּר קוֹדֶם עַל הַהֶבְדֵּל בֵּין הַמִּילִּים: קְרָב וּמִלְחָמָה.
קְרָב הוּא בְּעֶצֶם חֵלֶק מִמִּלְחָמָה. מִלְחָמָה מוּרְכֶּבֶת מִמִּסְפַּר קְרָבוֹת.
Metaphorically, we can say that the war is the bigger picture, while the battlesare pieces within that larger picture.
בְּאוֹפֶן מֵטָאפוֹרִי נוּכַל לְהַגִּיד כִּי הַמִּלְחָמָה הִיא הַתְּמוּנָה הַגְּדוֹלָה, וְהַקְּרָבוֹת הֵם חֲלָקִים מִתּוֹךְ הַתְּמוּנָה הַגְּדוֹלָה.
We use this expression to describe a situation where someone focuses all their efforts on one area of life while neglecting others.
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה כַּאֲשֶׁר מִישֶׁהוּ מַשְׁקִיעַ אֶת כָּל הַמַּאֲמַצִּים שֶׁלּוֹ בִּתְחוּם אֶחָד בַּחַיִּים וּמַזְנִיחַ אֶת הַתְּחוּמִים הָאֲחֵרִים.
For example: Someone who invests all their time in their business and indeed manages to grow it and earn well. However, at the same time, they do not spend time with their family. In the end, their spouse leaves them, and their children grow distant because they were not involved in raising them when they were young.
לְדוּגְמָא: מִישֶׁהוּ שֶׁהִשְׁקִיעַ אֶת כָּל הַזְּמַן שֶׁלּוֹ בָּעֵסֶק שֶׁלּוֹ וּבֶאֱמֶת הִצְלִיחַ לְהַגְדִּיל אֶת הָעֵסֶק וּלְהַרְוִיחַ יָפֶה, אֲבָל בְּמַקְבִּיל לֹא הִשְׁקִיעַ זְמַן בַּמִּשְׁפָּחָה שֶׁלּוֹ. בְּסוֹפוֹ שֶׁל דָּבָר אִשְׁתּוֹ עָזְבָה אוֹתוֹ וְהַיְּלָדִים הִתְרַחֲקוּ מִמֶּנּוׄ כִּי מִמֵּילָא הוּא לֹא הָיָה שׁוּתָּף בְּגִידּוּלָם כְּשֶׁהָיוּ קְטַנִּים.
