Winds of war blow
We use this expression metaphorically when we refer to a tense atmosphere between two entities, where we feel that the situation is about to deteriorate and a conflict is on the verge of breaking out.
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה בְּאוֹפֶן מֵטָאפוֹרִ י כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ מִתְכַּוְּנִים לַאֲוִירָה שֶׁל מֶתַח שֶׁיֵּשׁ בֵּין שְׁנֵי גּוּפִים, וַאֲנַחְנוּ מַרְגִּישִׁים שֶׁהַמַּצָּב עוֹמֵד לְהִדַּרְדֵּר וְעוֹמֶדֶת לִפְרוֹץ מִלְחָמָה.
The evident for this can be, for example, when the leaders of two countries exchange statements through the media, threatening each other. In such a scenario, we feel that "the winds of war are blowing."
זֶה בָּא לִידֵי בִּיטּוּי כַּאֲשֶׁר מַנְהִיגֵי שְׁתֵי מְּדִינוֹת, לְמָשָׁל, מִתְבַּטְּאִים בְּאֶמְצָעֵי הַתִּקְשׁוֹרֶת זֶה כְּנֶגֶד זֶה וּמְאַיְּמִים זֶה עַל זֶה, אָז אֲנַחְנוּ מַרְגִּישִׁים שֶׁ"נוֹשְׁבוֹת רוּחוֹת מִלְחָמָה".
Similarly, if there is a conflict between two individuals, and they exchange unpleasant words and fail to resolve the issue peacefully, we might say that "the winds of war are blowing" between them.
גַּם אִם יֵשׁ סִכְסוּךְ בֵּין שְׁנֵי אֲנָשִׁים וְהֵם אוֹמְרִים זֶה עַל זֶה מִילִּים לֹא יָפוֹת וְלֹא מַצְלִיחִים לִפְתּוֹר אֶת הַסִּכְסוּךְ בְּדַרְכֵי שָׁלוֹם , נֺאמַר שֶׁנּוֹשְׁבוֹת בֵּינֵהֶם רוּחוֹת מִלְחָמָה.
Sometimes, the winds of war also blow between two soccer teams, especially among their fans. This is completely unsportsmanlike and truly terrible, especially when the tension escalates into physical violence in the stadiums.
לִפְעָמִים נוֹשְׁבוֹת רוּחוֹת מִלְחָמָה גַּם בֵּין שְׁתֵּי קְבוּצוֹת כַּדּוּרֶגֶל וּבְעִיקָּר בֵּין אוֹהֲדֵיהֶן. זֶה מַצָּב לֹא סְפּוֹרְטִיבִי בִּכְלָל וְזֶה מַמָּשׁ נוֹרָא כְּשֶׁהָעִנְיָן מִדַּרְדֵּר לְאַלִּימוּת פִיזִית בַּמִּגְרָשִׁים.
