To sweep (something) below the rug
During Passover, we clean thoroughly. However, some people, mostly out of laziness, instead of picking up dirt and throwing it into the trash, sweep it under the carpet so that no one will see it.
בְּפֶסַח אֲנַחְנוּ עוֹשִׂים נִקָּיוֹן, אֲבָל יֵשׁ כָּאֵלֶּה, בְּעִיקָּר מִסִּיבּוֹת שֶׁל עַצְלָנוּת, בִּמְקוֹם לְהָרִים אֶת הַלִּכְלוּךְ וְלִזְרוֹק אוֹתוֹ בַּפַּח, הֵם מְטַאֲטְאִים אוֹתוֹ מִתַּחַת לַשָּׁטִיחַ כְּדֵי שֶׁאַף אֶחָד לֹא יִרְאֶה אוֹתוֹ.
We use this phrase metaphorically when people don't want to deal with their problems but just try to hide them.
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה בְּאוֹפֶן מֵטָאפוֹרִי כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנָשִׁים לֹא רוֹצִים לְהִתְמוֹדֵד עִם הַבְּעָיוֹת שֶׁלָּהֶם אֶלָּא רַק לְהַ סְתִּיר אוֹתָן.
For example, if a child does something wrong at school, the teacher calls the parents to inform them about it. The parents, unwilling or unable to address the issue with the child, tell the teacher they'll talk to their child but never actually do it. In this way, they are metaphorically trying to "sweep the problem under the carpet."
לְמָשָׁל: אִם יֶלֶד בְּבֵית הַסֵּפֶר עָשָׂה מַשֶּׁהוּ רַע. הַמּוֹרָה שֶׁלּוֹ הִתְקַשְּׁרָה לְהוֹרָיו וְסִפְּרָה לָהֶם עַל הַמַּעֲשֶׂה. הַהוֹרִים לֹא רוֹצִים אוֹ לֹא יְכוֹלִים לְדַבֵּר עִם הַיֶּלֶד עַל הַמַּעֲשֶׂה הַזֶּה אָז הֵם אוֹמְרִים לַמּוֹרָה שֶׁהֵם יְדַבְּרוּ עִם הַיֶּלֶד אֲבָל לֹא עוֹשִׂים אֶת זֶה. הֵם מְנַסִּים "לְטַאֲטֵא אֶת הַבְּעָיָה מִתַּחַת לַשָּׁטִיחַ".
It’s important to understand that if you decide to sweep dirt under the carpet, it will remain there—it won’t disappear. Over time, it might even get worse, as it could attract insects or mice. Similarly, in a metaphorical sense, if you choose to "sweep a problem under the carpet," it won’t go away and might even escalate!
אַתֶּם צְרִיכִים לָדַעַת שֶׁאִם אַתֶּם מַחְלִיטִים לְטַאֲטֵא לִכְלוּךְ מִתַּחַת לַשָּׁטִיחַ הוּא יִשָּׁאֵר שָׁם, הוּא לֹא יֵעָלֵם וְיִתָּכֵן שֶׁהַמַּצָּב יַחֲרִיף אִם יַגִּיעוּ חֲרָקִים אוֹ עַכְבָּרִים. וְגַם בְּאוֹפֶן מֵטָאפוֹרִי אִם אַתֶּם מַחְלִיטִים "לְטַאֲטֵא בְּעָיָה מִתַּחַת לַשָּׁטִיחַ" הִיא לֹא תֵּעָלֵם וַעֲלוּלָה אַף לְהַחֲרִיף!
