עָבַרְנוּ אֶת פַּרְעֹה נַעֲבוֹר גַּם אֶת זֶה
AVARNU ET PAR’O NA’AVOR GAM ET ZE
We passed pharaoh we will pass this too
This is a phrase widely used in Israel. When someone is going through a tough time and we want to encourage them, we say: "We overcame Pharaoh, we'll overcome this too."
זֶהוּ מִשְׁפָּט שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בּוֹ הַרְבֵּה מְאוֹד בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל. כַּאֲשֶׁר יֵשׁ לְמִישֶׁהוּ תְּקוּפָה קָשָׁה וַאֲנַחְנוּ רוֹצִים לְעוֹדֵד אוֹתוֹ נַגִּיד לוֹ: "עָבַרְנוּ אֶת פַּרְעֹה, נַעֲבוֹר גַּם אֶת זֶה".
In the story of the Exodus, we learn that when Joseph was in power in Egypt, the people of Israel who came to Egypt lived well.
בְּסִיפּוּר יְצִיאַת מִצְרַיִם אֲנַחְנוּ לוֹמְדִים שֶׁכַּאֲשֶׁר יוֹסֵף הָיָה בַּשִּׁלְטוֹן בְּמִצְרַיִם בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל שֶׁיָּרְדוּ לְמִצְרַיִם, חָיוּ טוֹב.
However, when a new ruler, Pharaoh, came to power in Egypt—one who did not know Joseph—he made the people of Israel's lives difficult. Their existence in Egypt became one of harsh slavery.
כַּאֲשֶׁר הִגִּיעַ לַשִּׁלְטוֹן בְּמִצְרַיִם שַׁלִּיט חָדָשׁ, פַּרְעֹה, שֶׁלֹּא הִכִּיר אֶת יוֹסֵף הוּא הִקְשָׁה אֶת הָעֲבוֹדָה עַל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְהַחַיִּים שֶׁל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּמִצְרַיִם הָיוּ חַיֵּי עַבְדוּת קָשִׁים מְאוֹד.
The message this expression conveys is one of encouragement. If we managed to endure and overcome the period of severe slavery in Egypt, which was imposed by Pharaoh's decree, then we can also overcome the current difficult period!
הַמֶּסֶר שֶׁהַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה רוֹצֶה לְהַעֲבִיר הוּא מֶסֶר שֶׁל עִידוּד. אִם הִצְלַחְנוּ לַעֲבוֹר אֶת הַתְּקוּפָה שֶׁל הָעַבְדוּת הַקָּשָׁה בְּמִצְרַיִם שֶׁהָיְתָה, כַּמּוּבָן, בִּפְקוּדַּת פַּרְעֹה, אָז נַעֲבוֹר גַּם אֶת הַתְּקוּפָה הַקָּשָׁה הַזֹּאת!
