The road to hell is paved
with good intentions
We use this expression when we see someone trying to do something good, but along the way, they end up causing harm or destroying other things.
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּש ִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ רוֹאִים מִישֶׁהוּ שֶׁרוֹצֶה לַעֲשׂוֹת מַשֶּׁהוּ טוֹב אֲבָל בַּדֶּרֶךְ הוּא פּוֹגֵעַ וְהוֹרֵס דְּבָרִים אֲחֵרִים.
The core message of this expression is that not only is the outcome important, but so is the way it is achieved.
הַמֶּסֶר הָעִיקָּרִי שֶׁהַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה רוֹצֶה לְהַעֲבִיר לָנוּ הוּא שֶׁלֹּא רַק הַתּוֹצָאָה חֲשׁוּבָה אֶלָּא גַּם הַדֶּרֶךְ לְהַשִּׂיג אוֹתָהּ.
Take Robin Hood, for instance. He stole from the rich and gave to the poor. On the surface, his actions seemed good, and his intentions were certainly noble. However, the way he achieved his goal—through theft—was unacceptable and forbidden in a structured, lawful society.
כּוּלָּנוּ מַכִּירִים אֶת רוֺבִּין הוּד. רוֺבִּין הוּד גָּנַב מֵאֲנָשִׁים עֲשִׁירִים וְחִלֵּק לַאֲנָשִׁים עֲנִיִּים. לִכְאוֹרָה, הַמַּעֲשֶׂה שֶׁלּוֹ הָיָה טוֹב וּבְוַדַּאי שֶׁהַכַּוָּנָה שֶׁלּוֹ הָיְתָה טוֹבָה, אֲבָל הוּא עָשָׂה אֶת הַמַּעֲשֶׂה הַטּוֹב בְּאֶמְצָעוּת גְּנֵיבָה, וּגְנֵיבָה בְּחֶבְרָה מְתוּקֶּנֶת הִיא פְּסוּלָה וַאֲסוּרָה.
Another example might be of someone who is eager to advance in life and earn enough money to buy nice things for their family. To do so, they work many long hours every day, but in the process, they barely spend any quality time with their family. So, what have they really achieved in the end?
אִם נַחֲשׁוֹב לְרֶגַע עַל אִישׁ אוֹ אִשָּׁה שֶׁמְּאוֹד רוֹצִים לְהִתְקַדֵּם בַּחַיִּים וּלְהַרְוִיחַ מַסְפִּיק כֶּסֶף כְּדֵי לִקְנוֹת דְּבָרִים יָפִים לַמִּשְׁפָּחָה, אָז בִּשְׁבִיל זֶה הֵם עוֹבְדִים הָמוֹן שָׁעוֹת בְּיוֹם וּבִכְלָל לֹא מַצְלִיחִים לְבַלּוֹת עִם הַמִּשְׁפָּחָה.
נוּ, אָז מָה עָשִׂינוּ בָּזֶה?
