Oh, how much I love this Passover tradition... During the Seder night, we have a custom to hide the Afikoman.
אוֹי, כַּמָּה שֶׁאֲנִי אוֹהֶבֶת אֶת הַמָּסוֹרֶת הַזֹּאת שֶׁל פֶּסַח.... בְּלֵיל הַסֵּדֶר אֲנַחְנוּ נוֹהֲגִים לְהַחֲבִּיא אֶת הָאֲפִיקוֹמָן.
What is the Afikoman?
There are three matzot on the Seder table, arranged one on top of the other. The Afikoman is half of the middle matzah. It serves as a reminder of the Passover sacrifice, and we traditionally hide it.
מָה זֶה אֲפִיקוֹמָן?
יֵשׁ שָׁלוֹשׁ מַצּוֹת עַל שׁוּלְחַן לֵיל הַסֵּדֶר. הַמַּצּוֹת מְסוּדָּרוֹת אַחַת עַל הַשְּׁנִיָּה. הָאֲפִיקוֹמָן הוּא חֲצִי מֵהַמַּצָּה הָאֶמְצָעִית. הָאֲפִיקוֹמָן הוּא זֵכֶר לְקוֺרְבַּן הַפֶּסַח וְאוֹתוֹ אֲנַחְנוּ נוֹהֲגִים לְהַחֲבִּיא.
When my children were young, we used to hide the Afikoman in the house, and they had to find it. Whoever found the Afikoman received a prize. It was so funny—the children would compete to see who could find the Afikoman first.
כְּשֶׁהַיְּלָדִים שֶׁלִּי הָיוּ קְטַנִּים, נָהַגְנוּ לְהַחֲבִּיא אֶת הָאֲפִיקוֹמָן בַּבַּיִת וְהֵם הָיוּ צְרִיכִים לִמְצוֹא אוֹתוֹ. מִי שֶׁמָּצָא אֶת הָאֲפִיקוֹמָן קִבֵּל מַתָּנָה. זֶה הָיָה נוֹרָא מַצְחִיק. הַיְּלָדִים הִתְחָרוּ בֵּינֵהֶם מִי יִמְצָא אֶת הָאֲפִיקוֹמָן רִאשׁוֹן.
Today, my children have grown up, and I can’t hide anything from them anymore!
הַיּוֹם הַיְּלָדִים גָּדְלוּ וַאֲנִי לֹא יְכוֹלָה לְהַחֲבִּיא מֵהֶם שׁוּם דָּבָר.
Here are some sentences using the infinitive verb "להחביא":
הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל לְהַחֲבִּיא:
1. When we buy a birthday present for one of our children, we usually hide it in the other child’s room until we give it, but we can’t hide the cake because it must be kept in the refrigerator.
1. כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ קוֹנִים מַתָּנָה לְיוֹם הַהוּלֶּדֶת שֶׁל אַחַד הַיְּלָדִים שֶׁלִּי אֲנַחְנוּ נוֹהֲגִים לְהַחֲבִּיא אוֹתָהּ בַּחֶדֶר שֶׁל הַיֶּלֶד הַשֵּׁנִי עַד שֶׁנִּיתֵּן אוֹתָהּ, אֲבָל אֶת הָעוּגָה אִי אֶפְשָׁר לְהַחֲבִּיא כִּי אֲנַחְנוּ חַיָּבִים לָשִׂים אוֹתָהּ בַּמְּקָרֵר.
2. Do you know the game "Hot - Cold"? When we play this game, we need to hide something, and when the person searching gets closer, we say "warming up", and when they move away, we say "cooling down".
2. מַכִּירִים אֶת הַמִּשְׂחָק "חַם-קַר"? כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ מְשַׂחֲקִים אֶת הַמִּשְׂחָק הַזֶּה אֲנַחְנוּ צְרִיכִים לְהַחֲבִּיא מַשֶּׁהוּ וְכַאֲשֶׁר מִי שֶׁמְּחַפֵּשׂ אוֹתוֹ מִתְקָרֵב לַמָּקוֹם שֶׁבּוֹ הַ'מַשֶּׁהוּ' הַזֶּה נִמְצָא אֲנַחְנוּ אוֹמְרִים לוֹ: "מִתְחַמֵּם", וְכַאֲשֶׁר הוּא מִתְרַחֵק מֵהַמָּקוֹם אֲנַחְנוּ אוֹמְרִים לוֹ: "מִתְקָרֵר".
3. When playing the game "Find the Treasure," we usually hide various clues and riddles along the path, so the participants find them and advance towards the treasure.
3. כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ מְשַׂחֲקִים אֶת הַמִּשְׂחָק "מְצָא אֶת הַמַּטְמוֹן", אֲנַחְנוּ נוֹהֲגִים לְהַחֲבִּיא כָּל מִינֵי פְּתָקִים וְכִתְבֵי חִידָה בְּמַסְלוּל הַמִּשְׂחָק כְּדֵי שֶׁהַמִּשְׁתַּתְּפִים יִמְצְאוּ אוֹתָם וְיִתְקַדְּמוּ אֶל עֵבֶר הַמַּטְמוֹן.
4. To write an intriguing story, it is possible to hide small hints in the plot that suggest the ending, but in a clever way that doesn’t reveal the surprise immediately.
4. כְּדֵי לִכְתּוֹב סִיפּוּר מְרַתֵּק, אֶפְשָׁר לְהַחֲבִּיא רְמָזִים קְטַנִּים בָּעֲלִילָה שֶׁיִּרְמְזוּ עַל הַסּוֹף, אֲבָל בְּצוּרָה מְתוּחְכֶּמֶת שֶׁלֹּא תַּחֲשׂוֹף אֶת כָּל הַהַפְתָּעָה מִיָּד.
