The chair house
Did you know that there are many different expressions for the bathroom in Hebrew?
For example: “nōḥiyut” (comfort), “beit hakavod” (house of honor), and also “beit hakise” (literally: the chair house).
הַיְדַעְתֶּם שֶׁלַּחֲדַר הַשֵּׁירוּתִים יֵשׁ הַרְבֵּה מְאוֹד בִּיטּוּיִים?
לְמָשָׁל: נוֹחִיּוּת, בֵּית הַכָּבוֹד, וְגַם בֵּית הַכִּסֵּא.
In the bathroom, there is a toilet on which a person sits to relieve themselves.
But what existed before the toilet?
Before the modern toilet, there was a chair with a hole in it, placed over a hole in the ground, and the person would sit on the chair to do their business.
That is the origin of the expression “beit hakise” — the “chair house.”
בַּשֵּׁירוּתִים יֵשׁ אַסְלָה שֶׁעָלֶיהָ הָאָדָם יוֹשֵׁב וְעוֹשֶׂה אֶת צְרָכָיו.
אֲבָל מָה הָיָה לִפְנֵי הָאַסְלָה?
לִפְנֵי הָאַסְלָה הָיָה בְּתוֹךְ חֲדַר הַשֵּׁירוּתִים כִּסֵּא שֶׁהָיָה בּוֹ חוֹר וּכְמ וֹ כֵּן הָיָה חוֹר בְּתוֹךְ הָאֲדָמָה וְהָאָדָם הָיָה יוֹשֵׁב עַל הַכִּסֵּא וְעוֹשֶׂה אֶת צְרָכָיו.
זֶהוּ מְקוֹר הַבִּיטּוּי.
In the Talmud it is written: “Who is wealthy? One who has a toilet near his table.” (Babylonian Talmud, Shabbat 25b)
As you probably know, in ancient times, toilets were not private but public, and used by many people in the same area.
The Talmud here refers to someone who has a nearby and accessible toilet, and says that such a person is considered wealthy.
בַּתַּלְמוּד כָּתוּב: "אֵיזֶהוּ עָשִׁיר? כֹּל שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ בֵּית הַכִּסֵּא סָמוּךְ לְשֻׁלְחָנוֹ" (תַּלְמוּד בָּבְלִי, שַׁבָּת כּה ע"ב).
בְּוַדַּאי יָדוּעַ לָכֶם שֶׁבֶּעָבָר הָרָחוֹק, הַשֵּׁירוּתִים לֹא הָיוּ פְּרָטִיִּים אֶלָּא צִיבּוּרִיִּים וְשִׁמְּשׁוּ אֲנָשִׁים רַבִּים שֶׁנִּמְצָאִים בְּאוֹתוֹ אֵזוֹר.
הַתַּלְמוּד מְדַבֵּר כָּאן עַל מִישֶׁהוּ שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ שֵׁירוּתִים קְרוֹבִים וּנְגִישִׁים. הַתַּלְמוּד אוֹמֵר שֶׁאָדָם כָּזֶה הוּא עָשִׁיר...
Did you know that a religious Jewish person says a blessing after leaving the bathroom? Here is the blessing:
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, Who formed man with wisdom and created within him many openings and cavities.
It is revealed and known before Your glorious throne that if one of them were to be opened or blocked, it would be impossible to survive and stand before You, even for one hour. Blessed are You, Lord, Who heals all flesh and performs wonders.
הַיְדַעְתֶּם שֶׁאָדָם יְהוּדִי דָּתִי מְבָרֵךְ לְאַחַר יְצִיאָתוֹ מִבֵּית הַכִּסֵּא?
הִנֵּה הַבְּרָכָה:
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה' אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם,
אֲשֶׁר יָצַר אֶת הָאָדָם בְּחָכְמָה,
וּבָרָא בוֹ נְקָבִים נְקָבִים חֲלוּלִים חֲלוּלִים.
גָּלוּי וְיָדוּעַ לִפְנֵי כִּסֵּא כְבוֹדֶךָ,
שֶׁאִם יִפָּתַח אֶחָד מֵהֶם אוֹ יִסָּתֵם אֶחָד מֵהֶם,
אִי אֶפְשָׁר לְהִתְקַיֵּם וְלַעֲמוֹד לְפָנֶיךָ אַפִילוּשָׁעָה אַחַת.
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה', רוֹפֵא כָּל בָּשָׂר וּמַפְלִיא לַעֲשׂוֹת.
