An oven - Ovens
The root of the word tanur (oven) is נ.ו.ר. The word tanur already appears in the Bible: “And ten women shall bake your bread in one oven.” (Leviticus 26:26).
שׁוֹרֶשׁ הַמִּילָּה תַּנּוּר הוּא נ.ו.ר.
הַמִּילָּה תַּנּוּר מוֹפִיעָה כְּבָר בַּמִּקְרָא:
"וְאָפוּ עֶשֶׂר נָשִׁים לַחְמְכֶם בְּתַנּוּר אֶחָד" (וַיִּקְרָא כו, פָּסוּק כו).
In Hebrew, the word tanur refers both to an electric appliance used for baking or cooking, and to a device used for heating.
To distinguish between them, we might say: tanur bishul ve’afiyah (cooking and baking oven) or tanur ḥimum (heating stove).
הַמִּילָּה תַּנּוּר מְשַׁמֶּשֶׁת בְּעִבְרִית גַּם לְמוּצָר חַשְׁמַלִּי שֶׁאִיתּוֹ אֲנַחְנוּ אוֹפִים אוֹ מְבַשְּׁלִים וְגַם לַמּוּצָר שֶׁאִיתּוֹ אֲנַחְנוּ מְחַמְּמִים.
וְאִם אֲנַחְנוּ רוֹצִים לְהַדְגִּישׁ אֶת הַהֶבְדֵּל בֵּינְהֶם אֲנַחְנוּ נֺאמַר:
תַּנּוּר בִּישּׁוּל וַאֲפִיָּה אוֹ תַּנּוּר חִימּוּם.
The root nurmeans “fire.”
Today, cooking and baking ovens operate with electricity, but in the past, as we know, people cooked and baked using fire. Heating, on the other hand, is still often done with fire, for example, when the oven is powered by gas.
נוּר = אֵשׁ.
הַיּוֹם תַּנּוּרֵי הַבִּישּׁוּל וְהָאֲפִיָּה עוֹבְדִים בְּאֶמְצָעוּת חַשְׁמַל, אֲבָל בֶּעָבָר, כְּפִי הַיָּדוּעַ, הָיוּ מְבַשְּׁלִים וְאוֹפִים עַל אֵשׁ.
הַחִימּוּם, לְעוּמַּת זֹאת, עֲדַיִן נַעֲשֶׂה בְּאֶמְצָעוּת אֵשׁ, אִם, לְמָשָׁל, הַתַּנּוּר מוּפְעָל בְּאֶמְצָעוּת גַּז.
Do you know the story of Hansel and Gretel (in Hebrew: Ami veTami) by the Brothers Grimm? In that story, there’s a wicked witch who wants to eat Hansel and Gretel, so she asks Gretel to turn on the oven. Gretel understands what the witch is planning, so she tells her she doesn’t know how to turn on the oven and asks the witch to show her. When the witch leans in, Gretel pushes her into the oven and saves them both.
מַכִּירִים אֶת הַסִּיפּוּר "עַמִּי וְתָמִי" שֶׁל הָאַחִים גְּרִים?
בַּסִּיפּוּר הַזֶּה יֵשׁ מְכַשֵּׁפָה רָעָה שֶׁרוֹצָה לֶאֱכוֹל אֶת עַמִּי וְתָמִי אָז הִיא מְבַקֶּשֶׁת מִתָּמִי לְהַדְלִיק אֶת הַתַּנּוּר.
תָּמִי הֵבִינָה מָה שֶׁהַמְּכַשֵּׁפָה הָרָעָה רוֹצָה לַעֲשׂוֹת אָז הִיא אוֹמֶרֶת לַמְּכַשֵּׁפָה שֶׁהִיא לֹא יוֹדַעַת לְהַדְלִיק אֶת הַתַּנּוּר וּמְבַקֶּשֶׁת מִמֶּנָּה לְלַמֵּד אוֹתָהּ.

הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם הַמִּילָּה 'תַּנּוּר':
1. Every Friday morning, I bake challah in the oven for Shabbat. I preheat the oven to 180°C and place the dough inside to bake for half an hour.

3. When there’s a power outage in the winter and the heater doesn’t work, I turn on the gas oven, and the kids leave their cold rooms and come to the living room to warm up. I may not like power outages, but I do love those cozy moments.
3. כְּשֶׁיֵּשׁ הַפְסָקַת חַשְׁמַל בַּחוֹרֶף, וְהַמַּזְגָן לֹא עוֹבֵד אֲנִי מַדְלִיקָה אֶת תַּנּוּר הַגַּז וְהַיְּלָדִים עוֹזְבִים אֶת הַחֲדָרִים הַקָּרִים שֶׁלָּהֶם וּבָאִים לַסָּלוֹן כְּדֵי לְהִתְחַמֵּם.
אֲנִי, אָמְנָם, לֹא אוֹהֶבֶת שֶׁיֵּשׁ הַפְסָקַת חַשְׁמַל, אֲבָל אֶת הָרְגָעִים הָאֵלֶּה אֲנִי אוֹהֶבֶת.
4. We often prepare chicken with potatoes in a honey and chili sauce in the oven for Shabbat. We pour the sauce over the potatoes and chicken and cook it in the oven for an hour and a half at 250°C.
