A chair - Chairs

The plural of the word kise (chair) is kis'ot, even though the word is masculine. This is a known phenomenon in Hebrew: masculine nouns that take a feminine plural ending “-ot.”

הָרִיבּוּי שֶׁל הַמִּילָּה הוּא כִּסְאוֹת וְזֹאת לַמְרוֹת שֶׁהַמִּילָּה הִיא בְּזָכָר, אֲבָל אֲנַחְנוּ כְּבָר מַכִּירִים אֶת הַתּוֹפָעָה הַזֹּאת בְּעִבְרִית: מִילִּים שֶׁהֵן בְּזָכָר אֲבָל סִיּוֹמֶת הָרִיבּוּי שֶׁלָּהֶם הִיא 'וֹת' שֶׁהִיא סִיּוֹמֶת שֶׁל מִילִּים בִּנְקֵבָה.

Around the dining table, there are usually several chairs. Some large families have a big table in the kitchen or dining room, with eight or even ten chairs around it.

סְבִיב שׁוּלְחַן הָאוֹכֶל יֵשׁ, בְּדֶרֶךְ כְּלָל, כַּמָּה כִּסְאוֹת. יֵשׁ מִשְׁפָּחוֹת גְּדוֹלוֹת שֶׁיֵּשׁ לָהֶן בַּמִּטְבָּח אוֹ בַּחֲדַר הָאוֹכֶל שׁוּלְחָן גָּדוֹל וּמִסְּבִיבוֹ שְׁמוֹנָה אוֹ עֲשָׂרָה כִּסְּאוֹת.

Unlike a chair meant for sitting upright at a table, we also have comfortable chairs or rocking chairs designed for sitting or semi-reclining. These are used at the beach, by the pool, or simply on the balcony.

לֹא כְּמוֹ כִּסֵּא שֶׁמְּיוֹעָד לִישִׁיבָה לְיַד הַשּׁוּלְחָן שֶׁעָלָיו אֲנַחְנוּ יוֹשְׁבִים יְשִׁיבָה זְקוּפָה, יֵשׁ לָנוּ כִּסֵּא נוֹחַ אוֹ כִּסֵּא נַדְנֵדָה שֶׁמְּשַׁמֵּשׁ לִישִׁיבָה/חֲצִי שְׁכִיבָה וּבוֹ אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים עַל שְׂפַת הַיָּם, עַל שְׂפַת הַבְּרֵיכָה אוֹ סְתָם בַּמִּרְפֶּסֶת.

There’s the expression “electric chair.” An electric chair is used for carrying out the death penalty. I don’t know if it still exists today, but I’ve seen old films in which people sentenced to death were placed in an electric chair and executed.

יֵשׁ לָנוּ אֶת הַבִּיטּוּי: "כִּסֵּא חַשְׁמַלִּי". כִּסֵּא חַשְׁמַלִּי מְשַׁמֵּשׁ לִגְזַר דִּין מָוֶת. אֲנִי לֹא יוֹדַעַת אִם זֶה קַיָּם עֲדַיִן בְּיָמֵינוּ אֲבָל רָאִיתִי סְרָטִים מֵהֶעָבָר בָּהֶם הוֹשִׁיבוּ אֶת הַנִּידּוֹנִים לַמָּוֶת עַל כִּסֵּא חַשְׁמַלִּי וְהוֹצִיאוּ אוֹתָם לַהוֹרֵג.

There’s also the “wheelchair.” This is a chair used by people with disabilities who cannot walk. In hospitals, such chairs are used to transport patients from place to place, especially after surgery or medical treatment when walking is difficult for them.

יֵשׁ "כִּסֵּא גַּלְגַּלִּים". זֶה כִּסֵּא שמְּשַׁמֵּשׁ לְנָכִים שֶׁאֵינָם יְכוֹלִים לָלֶכֶת. בְּבֵית הַחוֹלִים מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בְּכִסֵּא כָּזֶה עֲבוּר אֲנָשִׁים שֶׁצָּרִיךְ לְהַעֲבִיר אוֹתָם מִמָּקוֹם לְמָקוֹם וְאִם הֵם אַחֲרֵי נִיתּוּחַ אוֹ טִיפּוּל רְפוּאִי לִפְעָמִים קָשֶׁה לָהֶם לָלֶכֶת.

To distinguish: another chair with wheels is the office chair. Usually, in an office, we have a chair with wheels so that the person working can reach drawers or shelves near their desk without getting up.

לְהַבְדִּיל – עוֹד כִּסֵּא שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ גַּלְגַּלִּים הוּא הַכִּסֵּא הַמִּשְׂרָדִי. בְּדֶרֶךְ כְּלָל בַּמִּשְׂרָד יֵשׁ לָנוּ כִּסֵּא שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ גַּלְגַּלִּים כְּדֵי לְאַפְשֵׁר לְמִי שֶׁעוֹבֵד בַּמִּשְׂרָד לְהַגִּיעַ לִמְגֵרוֹת אוֹ מַדָּפִים שֶׁנִּמְצָאִים בְּאֵיזוֹר הַשּׁוּלְחָן שֶׁלּוֹ בְּלִי לָקוּם מֵהַכִּסֵּא.

“The royal chair” or “the throne” is an expression that refers not only to the physical chair the king sits on, but also to the royal status of the monarchy and the heirs to the throne.

"כִּסֵּא הַמַּלְכוּת" – אוֹ "כֵּס הַמַּלְכוּת" הוּא בִּיטּוּי שֶׁפֵּרוּשׁוֹ לֹא רַק הַכִּסֵּא הַפִיזִי שֶׁעָלָיו הַמֶּלֶךְ יוֹשֵׁב אֶלָּא גַּם הַמַּעֲמָד הַמַּלְכוּתִי שֶׁל הַשּׁוֹשֶׁלֶת וְהַיּוֹרְשִׁים שֶׁל תַּפְקִיד הַמֶּלֶךְ.

In the synagogue, there is Elijah’s Chair. The sandek (the person who holds the baby during the circumcision) sits on this chair.

And on Passover night, we always leave an empty chair for Elijah the Prophet.

בְּבֵית הַכְּנֶסֶת יֵשׁ לָנוּ אֶת הַכִּסֵּא שֶׁל אֵלִיָּהוּ הַנָּבִיא. הַסַּנְדָּק יוֹשֵׁב עַל הַכִּסֵּא הַזֶּה כְּשֶׁהוּא מַחֲזִיק אֶת הַתִּינוֹק לִפְנֵי בְּרִית הַמִּילָה.

גַּם בְּלֵיל הַסֵּדֶר אֲנַחְנוּ תָּמִיד מַשְׁאִירִים כִּסֵּא רֵיק לְאֵלִיָּהוּ הַנָּבִיא.

And we also have the expressions:

“Beit hakise” – literally “the house of the chair,”

“Nofel bein hakise’ot” – “falling between the chairs,”
