Sun

God created the sun for us on the fourth day. The sun is our great luminary, and it even has a Hebrew synonym: "chammah."

אֱלֹהִים בָּרָא לָנוּ אֶת הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ בַּיּוֹם הָרְבִיעִי. הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ הִיא הַמָּאוֹר הַגָּדוֹל שֶׁלָּנוּ. וְיֵשׁ לָנוּ גַּם מִילָּה נִרְדֶּפֶת לַשֶּׁמֶשׁ. הַמִּילָּה: חַמָּה.

We cannot live without it — it gives us light and life. Without the sun, we would be very cold. Flowers would not bloom without the sun's light.

אֲנַחְנוּ לֹא יְכוֹלִים בִּלְעָדֶיהָ. הִיא נוֹתֶנֶת לָנוּ אֶת הָאוֹר וְאֶת הַחַיִּים. בְּלִי הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ יִהְיֶה לָנוּ קַר מְאוֹד. פְּרָחִים לֹא יִפְרְחוּ בְּלִי אוֹר הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ.

However, in Israel, the sun can also burn and cause damage, so it’s important to be careful when going out during the hottest hours of the day.

אֲבָל בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ יְכוֹלָה גַּם לִשְׂרוֹף וְלַעֲשׂוֹת נְזָקִים וְצָרִיךְ לְהִזָּהֵר מְאוֹד כְּשֶׁיּוֹצְאִים לַשֶּׁמֶשׁ בַּשָּׁעוֹת הַחַמּוֹת שֶׁל הַיּוֹם.

As mentioned, the sun is an inseparable and vital part of our lives, and that’s why Hebrew is full of beautiful expressions that include the word “shemesh” (sun), for example:

“From sunrise to the soul’s departure”
“Sunstroke”
“There’s nothing new under the sun”
“Clear as the sun”

כָּאָמוּר, הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ הִיא חֵלֶק בִּלְתִּי נִפְרָד וְחָשׁוּב מְאוֹד בַּחַיִּים שֶׁלָּנוּ וְלָכֵן יֵשׁ לָנוּ הַרְבֵּה בִּיטּוּיִים יָפִים עִם הַמִּילָּה שֶׁמֶשׁ, לְמָשָׁל:

"מִצֵּאת הַחַמָּה עַד צֵאת הַנְּשָׁמָה"

"מַכַּת שֶׁמֶשׁ"

"אֵין חָדָשׁ תַּחַת הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ"

הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם הַמִּילָּה שֶׁמֶשׁ:

1. During the hot summer, everyone looked for a shady spot to avoid the strong solar radiation.

3. In the morning, she opened the curtains and let the sun light up the room.

3. בַּבּוֹקֶר, הִיא פָּתְחָה אֶת הַוִּילוֹנוֹת וְנָתְנָה לַשֶּׁמֶשׁ לְהָאִיר אֶת הַחֶדֶר.

4. On their hike, they watched the sun setting on the horizon and enjoyed the beautiful view.

4. בַּטִּיּוּל הֵם רָאוּ אֶת הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ שׁוֹקַעַת בָּאוֹפֶק, וְנֶהֱנוּ מֵהַמַּרְאֶה הַמַּקְסִים.
