A pineapple
Pineapples grow in tropical climates.
הָאָנָנָס גָּדֵל בִּמְקוֹמוֹת עִם מֶזֶג אֲוִיר טְרוֹפִּי.
But in Israel, the climate isn’t tropical, so pineapples are grown in greenhouses. In summer, they’re covered with shade nets to protect them from the scorching sun, and in winter they’re covered with plastic sheets to shield them from the cold.
אֲבָל בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל אֵין מֶזֶג אֲוִיר טְרוֹפִּי אָז מְגַדְּלִים אוֹתוֹ בַּחֲמָמוֹת. בַּקַּיִץ מְכַסִּים אוֹתוֹ בְּ"רֶשֶׁת צֵל" כְּדֵי לְהָגֵן עָלָיו מִפְּנֵי הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ הַיּוֹקֶדֶת וּבַחוֹרֶף מְכַסִּים אוֹתוֹ בִּפְלַסְטִיק כְּדֵי לְהָגֵן עָלָיו מִפְּנֵי הַקּוֹר.
Pineapple is a very interesting fruit. Its leaves can grow 30–100 cm long, and its unique rind is made up of spiny protrusions. Each pineapple weighs between 1–3 kilograms.
הָאָנָנָס הוּא פְּרִי מְאוֹד מְעַנְיֵן. יֵשׁ לוֹ עָלֶה בְּאוֹרֶךְ שֶׁל 30-100 סֶנְטִימֶטֶר. הַקְּלִיפָּה שֶׁלּוֹ מְאוֹד מְיוּחֶדֶת וּמוּרְכֶּבֶת מִבְּלִיטוֹת דּוֹקְרָנִיּוֹת.
גּוֹדֶל שֶׁל כָּל אָנָנָס בֵּין 1-3 קִילוֹגְרָם.
We use pineapple in desserts and fruit salads, though I’ve heard it’s also put on pizza (yikes...).
