Sunscreen
The phrase “krem haganah” (sunscreen) consists of two words:
The first word — krem — is not originally Hebrew. It comes from the French word crème. The Hebrew word for krem in this context is mishkha (ointment), but people don’t say mishkhat haganah, they say krem haganah.
הַבִּיטּוּי 'קְרֶם הֲגָנָה' מוּרְכָּב מִשְּׁתֵּי מִילִּים:
הַמִּילָּה הָרִאשׁוֹנָה – קְרֶם, זֹאת לֹא מִילָּה בְּעִבְרִית. הִיא בָּאָה אֵלֵינוּ מֵהַצָּרְפָתִית Crème. הַמִּילָּה הָעִבְרִית לִקְרֶם בַּהֶקְשֵׁר הַזֶּה הִיא 'מִשְׁחָה'. אֲבָל אֲנַחְנוּ לֹא אוֹמְרִים מִשְׁחַת הֲגַנָּה אֶלָּא קְרֶם הֲגַנָּה.
We also use the word krem in the context of food — for example: krem shokolad (chocolate cream), krem vanil (vanilla cream) — but in that case, the proper Hebrew word would be tzippuy (coating or topping).
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּמִּילָּה קְרֶם גַּם בְּהֶקְשֵׁר שֶׁל עוּגָה, לְדוּגְמָא: קְרֶם שׁוֹקוֹלָד, קְרֶם וָנִיל, אֲבָל בַּהֶקְשֵׁר הַזֶּה הַמִּילָּה הָעִבְרִית תִּהְיֶה צִיפּוּי.
The second word — haganah — comes from the root ג.נ.נ and the infinitive: le’hagen, meaning to protect. And indeed, the role of sunscreen is to protect our skin from the sun’s radiation.
הַמִּילָּה הַשְּׁנִיָּה: 'הֲגָנָה'. שׁוֹרֶשׁ: ג.נ.נ. שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל: לְהָגֵן, כְּלוֹמַר: לִשְׁמוֹר. וְאָכֵן תַּפְקִידוֹ שֶׁל קְרֶם הַהֲגַנָּה הוּא לִשְׁמוֹר עַל הָעוֹר שֶׁלָּנוּ מִפְּנֵי קְרִינַת הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ.
This same word appears in the phrase Tzva Haganah LeYisrael — the Israel Defense Forces — meaning “the army that protects Israel,” usually abbreviated as Tzahal (IDF).
הַמִּילָּה הֲגָנָה מוֹפִיעָה גַּם בַּבִּיטּוּי "צְבָא הֲגָנָה לְיִשְׂרָאֵל" שֶׁמַּשְׁמָעוּתוֹ הַצָּבָא שֶׁשּׁוֹמֵר עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל וּבְקִיצּוּר: צה"ל.
Here are a few sentences with the expression krem haganah:
הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם הַבִּיטּוּי 'קְרֶם הֲגַנָּה':
1. The children learned in class that sunscreen helps protect against harmful UV rays.
1. הַיְּלָדִים לָמְדוּ בַּכִּיתָּה שׁ ֶקְּרֶם הֲגַנָּה מְסַיֵּעַ בַּהֲגָנָה מִפְּנֵי קַרְנֵי UV הַמַּזִּיקוֹת לָעוֹר.
2. He went to the beach but forgot to apply sunscreen. His skin turned red after a few hours.
2. הוּא הָלַךְ לְחוֹף הַיָּם אֲבָל שָׁכַח לָשִׂים קְרֶם הֲגַנָּה. עוֹרוֹ הָפַךְ אָדוֹם לְאַחַר כַּמָּה שָׁעוֹת.
3. At the pharmacy, the pharmacist recommended sunscreen with a high SPF.
3. בְּבֵית הַמִּרְקַחַת, הָרוֹקֵחַ הִמְלִיץ עַל קְרֶם הֲגַנָּה עִם SPF גָּבוֹהַּ.
4. I’ve heard that if you apply sunscreen and then go into the water, you should reapply it afterward — because being in the water reduces the sunscreen’s effectiveness.
4. שָׁמַעְתִּי שֶׁאִם אַתֶּם מוֹרְחִים קְרֶם הֲגַנָּה וְנִכְנָסִים לַמַּיִם, אַתֶּם צְרִיכִים לִמְרוֹחַ קְרֶם הֲגַנָּה שׁוּב כִּי הַשְּׁהִיָה בַּמַּיִם מַקְטִינָה אֶת יְעִילוּת קְרֶם הַהֲגַנָּה.
